Q5 designed to save food manufacturers time, money

MARSHFIELD, WIS. (Dec. 21, 2007) -- When it comes to processing cheese, every percentage of product moisture counts.

A processed cheese plant facing the challenge of maximizing their product moisture percentages while still remaining within customer specifications found success with the new Q5 laboratory analyzer from Engineering Solutions Experts (ESE).

ESE, a process automation engineering company based in Marshfield, Wis., recently launched the Q5, which provides timely and accurate sample moisture determination straight from the production floor by using near infrared transmission.

By using the Q5, the client was able to receive accurate moisture results in five seconds, according to Beth Schwertel, a technical support analyst with ESE. The time saved in sample testing allowed the cheese plant to slightly adjust its moisture set point and save the company more than $200,000 a year, Schwertel said.

“The Q5 works very fast. In the food industry, it’s important to make any necessary changes in real time. The Q5 allows companies to do just that,” she said. “For food manufacturers, it’s essential they hit their necessary targets with the lowest deviation possible. That produces a healthy bottom line and provides consistency in their production of the food products.”

The industry-leading Q5 combines the latest in NIR testing technology with ESE’s own Process Optimizer software. The Q5 is not only easy to use, but also engineered to use no moving parts, which helps ensure the accuracy and repeatability of all sample measurements, Schwertel said.

Not only does the Q5 save time, it also saves space. A single machine measures all types of samples including liquids, solids, viscous slurries and powders and the newest version is 60 percent smaller than earlier models.

“The Q5 is so small, it doesn’t take up a lot of space, which is great for labs. It also tests for multiple constituents at one time such as fat, moisture and protein. There’s no need for separate machines,” Schwertel said.

ESE President Tom Walther said the development of the Q5 continues ESE’s mission to provide food manufacturers with the best automation and analytical solutions available.

“We’re committed to providing superior process automation to our customers that integrates innovative analytical solutions into a plant’s control system. The Q5 product analyzer is a prime example of our commitment to this focus,” he said.

“Our team of analytical technicians helps set ESE apart. We make sure a company’s staff is trained right after receiving the Q5,” he said.

ESE has been providing food and dairy product manufacturers’ production capacity and profit improvement system solutions utilizing Rockwell Automation controls and instrumentation for more than 20 years. For more information, visit www.ese1.com.

ESE Receives State Agriculture Grant

Marshfield, Wis. – ESE has received a $14,000 state agricultural development grant to improve cheese yields by testing new technology to monitor and control moisture levels in the cheese-making process.

ESE’s grant was one of 16 Agricultural Development and Diversification grants totaling $355,500 for products and processes designed to add value to Wisconsin products, helping companies and, ultimately farmers, compete in high-end markets, said Agriculture Secretary Rod Nilsestuen.

“This grant will help us better utilize the capabilities of our inline product analyzer and improve the ability to control the process of mozzarella cheese production and help our customers improve their operations,” said ESE president Tom Walther.

ESE is working on the project with the Center for Dairy Research in Wisconsin.

Started in 1986, ESE has grown to be a leading provider of engineering systems for the food and dairy manufacturing sectors. A two-year Inc. 500 company, ESE has seen significant expansion, broadening its offerings to include analytical equipment, consulting and project management services.

For Immediate Release:
ESE Moves Toward Employee Ownership

MARSHFIELD, WISCONSIN - ESE founder and CEO Mark Weber today announced the formation of an Employee Stock Ownership Program, or ESOP, for the 20 year-old Marshfield, WI engineering firm. Begun in 1986, ESE has grown to be a leading provider of engineering systems for the food and dairy manufacturing sectors. A 2-year Inc. 500 company, ESE has seen significant expansion in the last ten years, broadening its offerings to include analytical equipment, consulting, and project management services that have enabled the company to achieve record growth through the tough economic times of recent years.

Fueled by ESE’s recent growth, Weber and company president, Tom Walther instituted the ESOP to enable their employees to share more meaningfully in the success of the company. Walther outlined the two primary reasons for creating the ESOP. “First, our future growth is directly related to the quality of our team. We wanted to create an incentive that would retain and reward our current team members and enhance our ability to attract the high caliber professionals we will need moving forward. Second, we created this as part of our strategic planning to develop comprehensive management and ownership transition capabilities”.

Employee Stock Ownership Programs have recently gained popularity in the US because they give employees a larger stake in the everyday workings and long-term viability of the company. ESE’s 30 eligible employees have been allocated shares in the company, making ESE, Inc. one of the few Central Wisconsin employers to move to an ESOP. Nationwide, nearly 11,000 companies have instituted ESOPS, encompassing over 8 million employees.

For Immediate Release:
ESE, Inc. Achieves CSIA Registered Member Status

In August, 2005, ESE successfully passed an intensive, independent audit of our business practices and was awarded Registered Member status in the Control and Information Systems Integrator Association (CSIA). The audit process uses the American Consulting Engineers Council’s (ACEC) Peer Review program as the basis for the audit. The Registered Member program was developed by the CSIA to simplify the daunting task for end users, OEM’s and manufacturers to identify, interview, qualify, evaluate and select the best-qualified System Integration firm.

Companies often take a narrow view of qualifying a System Integrator for a project. For instance, project cost is often the sole variable that companies use to select a System Integrator. This approach ignores many other criteria that should be taken into consideration to ensure a truly professional System Integrator is selected. To ignore these other criteria is to invite disaster. These other criteria are covered in depth during the audit process.

To be named Registered Member, ESE spent several months preparing for the audit process that measured our business activities against benchmarking criteria in seven business areas – General Management, Human Resources, Project Management, Quality Management, Financial Management, Business Development, and Technical Management.

Breakdowns of the significant points that are addressed in-depth in the seven business areas during the audit process are as follows:

1.      General Management: Includes Strategic Management, Organizational Structure, Facilities and Equipment, Computer Systems Management, and Loss Prevention.

2.      Human Resources: Includes Office Administration, Recruiting, Employee Development and Retention Programs.

3.      Project Management: Includes Project Planning and Methodologies, Performance, Testing, Commissioning, and Ongoing Support.

4.      Quality Management: Includes Continuous Measurable Improvements, Client Surveys, Customer Service, and Project Execution.

5.      Financial Management: Includes Measurement of Financial Performance, Financial Planning, Billing Procedures, Management of Credit, Expenses, Cash and Purchasing and Security, Project Financial Reporting, and Tax Policy.

6.      Business Development: Includes Organization for Business Development, Business Development Practices, Development of Proposals, Negotiation and Contracting.

7.      Technical Management: Includes Technical Infrastructure, Project Process, Testing, Configuration Management, Reuse Management, and ongoing Technical Training.

For companies planning to hire a system integrator, looking for a Registered Member, quite frankly, takes the guesswork out of being qualified for any given project.

ESE was the 73rd CSIA worldwide member to achieve Registered Member status.

On your next project, demand the best, and accept only companies with CSIA Registered Member status. This achievement guarantees that the System Integrator has reached the highest level of professional and technical excellence.
